Welcome to my Galileo Galilei Page!!!!!!!!!!!!

Galileo Galileo was a very important Italian scientist. He made many great discoveries such as: that the Earth revolved around the sun, Jupiter's moons, and that Saturn had rings. The only problem was that in his time, the Roman Catholic Church ruled Italy and they wouldn't believe Galileo's ideas and discoveries because they thought that since all of his ideas went against what Aristotle (a Greek philosopher)said, it also went against the church. Galileo was put under house arrest for writing many books showing his evidence in discoveries. He continued his discoveries at home, but sadly died in 1642. :( Only in 1992 did the church forgive Galileo and admitted that they were wrong.

moonnnn_craterrrrss
Up-Close and Personal with the Moon's Craters

These moon craters and mountains were one of Galileo's many discoveries. He discovered them in 1610.

This discovery went against what Aristotle said which was that God

made everything perfect. These craters and mountains show that not everything that

God made is perfect, such as, the Moon. Everything has its imperfections.

This is Saturn! The things coming off the sides of it are its rings

Here's a closer pic of Saturn

Saturn's rings were another discovery Galileo made. He discovered them in 1610. At first, he thought they were ears. Later on, he saw them again and thought that they were planets forming a three bodied planet
system. He was always confused why they constantly dissapeared and reappeared.

JUPITERR_ANIME_NOV._5-7
Jupiter and it's beautiful moons

Jupiter's four moons was a huge discovery for Galileo, he discovered them on March 22, 1610. He named the four moons after the four sons of the Medici family, a powerful family in Italy because he wanted the to agree with him.
This proved yet another of Aristotle's ideas wrong. Aristotle thought that everything revolved around the Earth, even the Sun! But Jupiter's moons say otherwise, because Jupiter's moons are revolving around Jupiter, not Earth.

SUnnnn
This is the Sun. Can you see its spots?
These sunspots that you see on the Sun also prove that not everything that God has made is perfect. Everyone refused to believe this idea beacuse they thought Galileo was insulting the heavens, eventhough Galileo was a true catholic just like everyone else.

venusssss
This is an animation of Venus's phases, just like our moon's!

In 1610, after Galileo moved to Florence, he made a new discovery with his telescope, he saw that Venus had it's own phases just like the ones of our moon. The people that believed in Aristotle agreed that Venus had phases because they thought that just like our moon, Venus orbited it the Earth. The only difference with Venus's phases was that it takes a year and half for it to go through all of its phases, but it only takes the Moon a month. This meant that Venus's orbit would have to be much larger than what Aristotle thought, if Venus actually did orbit the Earth. Galileo, once again, new that Aristotle was wrong because at one point in its orbit, Venus is on the opposite of the Sun making it look like a round circle and when Venus is in between Earth and the Sun, we cannot see Venus at all. The center of it all is the Sun, making Galileo get new ideas and get into more trouble.

Can you guess in what order these were all discovered by Galileo Galilei?

(ANSWERS: 1. Mountains and craters of moon

2. Jupiter's Moons

3. Rings of Saturn

4. Phases of Venus

5. The sunspots.)
